Vietnamese people, of which: the so-called “Viet” or “Kinh” is nearly 73,6 million, account for 85.8% of the population. Their population is concentrated in the alluvial deltas and coastal plains of the country. A homogeneous social and ethnic group, the Kinh exert political and economic control. There are 54 ethnic minority groups throughout the country, but the Kinh are purveyors of the dominant culture.

According to the General Statistic Office (GSO), Vietnam population in 2009 in total was 85.789.573 people. Vietnam has the third largest population in Southeast Asia (after Indonesia, and Philippine) and the thirteenth largest one in over the world.
